This month I will be preaching on St Paul’s famous letters to the Ephesians. Here is this little church of Gentiles who are believers in south western Asia Minor. They are overwhelmed by the ways of the world and find themselves fighting among themselves, uncertain about what to do. They need direction and encouragement because this is a situation that takes a new wisdom for the new believers to continue to follow Christ.
This letter was circulated to be read in more than one place. Paul did not know all the readers personally even though Paul spent better than two years in Ephesus preaching the Good News. It is obvious Paul cares about what happens to these people and he was emotionally attached to them
Paul most likely wrote this letter from Rome during his first imprisonment or soon after his arrival there in the year 62. As a prisoner himself he reflects on what it means to be a prisoner in Christ. A man sealed by the Holy Spirit for the work of the Spirit.
